The management of the University of Calabar has suspended nine students for two academic sessions over their alleged involvement in examination malpractice and submission of forged academic results.

The decision was taken at the institution’s 252nd Senate meeting following the consideration of reports presented by the Ad-Hoc Senate Committee on Examination Malpractice and the Senate Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

According to findings submitted to the Senate, five of the affected students were apprehended inside examination halls with unauthorised materials, while four others were found to have presented forged academic credentials to the university.

A letter signed by the Registrar, Dr Chukwuka I. Icha, confirmed that the suspension would take effect from the 2024/2025 academic session.

Those affected are Akwuba Enestina (300 Level, Pharmacy); Udom Bomfon Iboro (300 Level, Pharmacy); Nwankwo Daniel N. (200 Level, Pharmacy); Ore Kolade Israel (500 Level, Pharmacy); and Chisom Modestus Ejafa (500 Level, Pharmacy).

Others are Lazarus Victoria Ebogo of the Department of Home Economics, Faculty of Vocational and Entrepreneurial Education; Ele Tina Godwin of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences; Ofem Favour Patrick of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, Faculty of Biological Sciences; and Makailu Nelly Pamilo of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts.

The university management directed the affected students to stay away from academic activities within the period of suspension.

It also mandated the Deans of the affected faculties, Heads of Departments, and the Acting Chief Security Officer to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

The development underscores the institution’s renewed clampdown on examination malpractice and academic fraud, as authorities insist on maintaining discipline and protecting the integrity of its academic programmes.

Efforts to get further comments from the university’s spokesperson were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
