A coalition of Muslim vanguards and key stakeholders in Ogun State has intensified calls for the emergence of a Muslim governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections, citing the need for fairness, inclusivity, and balanced representation in the state’s political leadership.
The group, under the aegis of Ogun Muslim Vanguards, made its position known during a press conference on Sunday, where its President, Amir Sanusi Daud, urged political parties to prioritise equity in their candidate selection processes.
The advocacy, themed “Ogun 2027 – Consideration for a Muslim Candidate for Fair Representation Across Region and Religion,” seeks to address what the coalition described as longstanding underrepresentation of Muslims in the state’s top political office.
Speaking with journalists, Daud dismissed claims that the demand was rooted in religious sentiment, stressing instead that it was driven by the principles of competence, capacity, and fairness.
He said, “This advocacy is not a dogmatic call. We are advocating for competence, capacity, and qualified candidates with experience and visibility. We are encouraging Muslim candidates to step forward and contest for elective positions in governance.”
Daud argued that Ogun State’s leadership over the past three decades had not adequately reflected its religious diversity, noting that Muslim representation in the governorship had remained minimal.
“Over the last 34 years, Muslim representation in the governorship has been minimal. This reality calls for reflection and fairness. Giving attention to this call will enhance diversity and strengthen nation-building,” he added.
The coalition maintained that inclusive governance is essential for democratic consolidation, warning that failure to reflect the state’s socio-religious composition in leadership could weaken public trust.
It also called on political parties, particularly the ruling All Progressives Congress, to adopt transparent and inclusive processes that would give all qualified aspirants a level playing field.
According to the stakeholders, their demand is not driven by sectional interests but by the need to ensure that all segments of society feel a sense of belonging in governance.
They added that equitable representation would promote stability, mutual respect, and sustainable development across the state.
The group urged delegates, political actors, and decision-makers to consider inclusivity as a critical factor in the build-up to the 2027 governorship election.
It reaffirmed its commitment to fostering social harmony and democratic participation, expressing optimism that the initiative would strengthen unity and progress in Ogun State.
