The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, on Thursday commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for its professionalism in monitoring the party’s nationwide ward congresses, as the opposition party begins a fresh round of internal reorganisation ahead of its national convention.
This was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by her Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ken Asogwa.
The exercise marks a critical step in the LP’s efforts to strengthen its grassroots structures across Nigeria’s 8,809 political wards, amid ongoing efforts to reposition the party following internal leadership disputes and preparations for future electoral contests.
At her Jere South Ward in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where she participated in the congress held jointly with Jere North Ward, Usman observed the process and expressed satisfaction with the orderly conduct of the exercise.
The LP chair expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise and singled out INEC for praise over its oversight role.
She said, “This marks the commencement of our congresses at the ward level. What you have seen here are Jere North and Jere South conducting their congresses together, as is customary. New executives have been duly elected.
“Reports from across the federation indicate that the exercise was largely peaceful and well-organised, with INEC playing a commendable role through timely monitoring.”
The ward congresses, conducted simultaneously across the country, produced new executives expected to steer party affairs at the grassroots level.
The development sets the stage for the next phases of the congress cycle, including local government and state congresses, before a national convention.
Usman outlined the party’s timetable, noting that local government congresses will hold on April 24, followed by state congresses on April 25, culminating in a national convention scheduled for April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State.
Beyond structural reorganisation, the LP leadership also used the occasion to reiterate its commitment to inclusivity, particularly gender balance in party administration.
She urged party members to sustain the peaceful atmosphere recorded during the ward congresses as the process advances to subsequent stages, including the national convention, which is expected to shape the party’s leadership and direction ahead of future political engagements.
