.. Former Governors Realign In Surprise Political Development
.. Abuja Meeting Sparks Speculation Over Emerging Opposition Bloc
A major political tremor swept through Nigeria’s opposition space on Sunday as former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), receiving their membership cards in Abuja.
The development, which unfolded during a closed-door meeting of party leaders, has intensified speculation over a possible emerging opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The two high-profile politicians, both former presidential candidates in previous elections, were received into the party fold amid cheers from supporters shortly after their induction.
The reception was led by former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC national leader, Seriake Dickson, who formally presented the membership cards to the defectors.
Although full details of the private meeting were not disclosed, party insiders described the move as a significant consolidation within opposition ranks, suggesting that more political realignments may follow in the coming weeks.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso, a prominent northern political figure, were seen exchanging pleasantries with top NDC officials before their formal induction.
Their defection marks one of the most consequential shifts in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape in recent months, as parties intensify consultations and coalition-building efforts ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The NDC leadership is yet to issue a formal statement outlining the strategic implications of the development, but party sources hinted that further heavyweight defections could soon be announced.
