The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has appointed a 13-member interim National Working Committee in a move aimed at stabilising the party’s leadership following a protracted internal crisis.
The decision was announced on Monday after a meeting led by the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who said the action was in line with the party’s constitution.
Wabara explained that the development became necessary after a Supreme Court judgment upheld the nullification of the party’s Ibadan National Convention, a situation he noted had created a vacuum in the PDP’s leadership structure.
According to him, the newly constituted interim NWC will be headed by a former National Chairman of the party, Tanimu Turaki.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the resolution was reached during a National Executive Committee meeting convened by a faction of the party loyal to Turaki at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.
The formation of the interim leadership is the latest twist in the lingering crisis rocking the opposition party, which has been grappling with internal divisions and leadership disputes in recent months.
Efforts to reconcile aggrieved factions have so far yielded limited results, with stakeholders expressing divergent views over the legitimacy of party organs and decisions.
Party insiders say the interim NWC is expected to steer the affairs of the PDP pending the resolution of the leadership tussle and the conduct of a fresh national convention.
As of the time of filing this report, details of other members of the interim committee were yet to be officially released, while reactions from opposing factions within the party were still being awaited.
