Bakare Denies Seeking Personal Favour In Meeting With Tinubu

Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church and former presidential aspirant, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has denied speculations that his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu was motivated by personal interests.

Bakare, who contested in the 2023 presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), met with President Tinubu at his Lagos residence on June 4. His visit stirred public reactions, with critics suggesting the meeting was aimed at securing personal benefits from the administration.

Reacting during a sermon at his church, Bakare dismissed the insinuations, insisting he had never compromised his principles for political or material gain.

“Some people still think he has gone there to settle himself. In what way have I ever settled myself before? What they gave me, I returned. What am I looking for?” Bakare queried.

He reiterated his longstanding commitment to speaking truth to power and recalled a previous public warning he issued to President Tinubu, urging him not to misuse his authority.

In a state of the nation address delivered on April 20 in Lagos, Bakare had advised Tinubu to embrace wise counsel and “stop playing God,” urging him to implement a coordinated strategy to rescue the nation from economic and political crises.

His recent clarification appears aimed at reinforcing his image as a vocal and principled cleric who remains politically active but unaligned with transactional politics.

Bakare’s visit to the President came amidst growing public dissatisfaction with the Tinubu administration over rising hardship, insecurity, and economic instability, which has triggered intense scrutiny of political alignments.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that Bakare, known for his blunt sermons and activism, has remained a controversial figure in Nigeria’s political and religious landscapes, especially following his bold stance during and after the 2023 elections.
