Incumbent Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has secured a second term in office after a decisive victory in Saturday’s governorship election across Anambra State.

Soludo dominated the polls in all 21 local government areas, defeating his rivals by a wide margin. According to the final results announced on Sunday by the state’s Returning Officer, Edoma Omoregie, the governor polled 422,664 votes, while his closest challenger, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), garnered 99,445 votes.

Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) came third with 37,753 votes, followed by George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP) with 10,576 votes, and Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who trailed with 1,401 votes.

The election, which spanned 5,718 polling units, witnessed logistical challenges, including delays in the arrival of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and security personnel at several locations. Observers also reported incidents of vote buying and transactional voting across the state.

In a post-election briefing, the leading candidates confirmed receiving reports of vote buying but accused rival parties of perpetrating the practice.

Voter turnout remained low despite the high-stakes election. Out of over 2.8 million registered voters, 598,229 were accredited, and 595,298 votes were cast, with 584,054 deemed valid. INEC ad hoc officials also reported glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in some areas.

Soludo’s re-election underscores APGA’s continued dominance in Anambra politics and positions him to pursue ongoing development initiatives in the state.
