The Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget has dismissed claims that N4.2 billion was set aside in the 2026 budget solely for the purchase of office furniture and microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor.
In a statement released on Friday, the ministry explained that the N4,247,816,006 earmarked for the office represents the total capital allocation for the 2026 fiscal year, not expenditure on office fittings as widely reported.
“The total capital allocation for the Office of the Deputy Governor for 2026 is N4,247,816,006. This figure has been incorrectly portrayed as being meant only for office furniture and microphones,” the ministry said.
According to the breakdown, N4,077,816,006 of the allocation is dedicated to the reconstruction of the Round House complex, a six-storey building accommodating over 50 offices.
The project covers structural upgrades, retrofitting, and alternative energy installations.
The remaining N170 million is for office equipment, furniture, fittings, and other minor capital items.
The ministry urged media outlets and stakeholders to consult official budget documents to avoid misrepresentation, stressing that Lagos State’s budgetary provisions are guided by due process, fiscal discipline, and accounting standards.
The clarification follows social media reports suggesting that the Deputy Governor’s office planned to spend N4.2 billion on ten executive tables and chairs, 40 visitor chairs, 120 officers’ tables and chairs, and 30 microphones for the conference room.
The reports further claimed that N97.5 million had already been spent on similar items in 2025.
For context, the approved 2026 Lagos State budget totals N4.44 trillion, with N2.337 trillion for capital projects, including N16 billion for community-based infrastructure interventions and N35.4 billion for the construction of permanent legislative quarters for lawmakers.
The Lagos State House of Assembly passed the appropriation bill in February 2026, sending it to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for assent.
The governor described the budget as a “Budget of Shared Prosperity,” designed to enhance inclusive growth and improve welfare under the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda.
The ministry reaffirmed Lagos State Government’s commitment to prudent management of public funds and regretted any misunderstanding arising from earlier reports.
