Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, on Saturday alleged that Nigerians had lost confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission, accusing the electoral body of no longer acting as an impartial umpire ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mark made the allegation while addressing leaders of opposition political parties at a national summit held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde.
The former Senate President further alleged that the commission had taken sides in the nation’s political process, claiming that the ruling All Progressives Congress was working in concert with INEC to weaken and suppress opposition parties.
According to him, the opposition must close ranks and forge a united front to dislodge the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 polls.
He said, “The task before us is more of a national rescue mission. The APC is willing to suppress the opposition political parties and opposition political figures.”
Mark warned against what he described as a drift towards one-party dominance, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy must not be allowed to degenerate.
“It has never happened in Nigeria that we have only one political party and it will never happen in our own generation. We cannot win as fragmented segments,” he said.
He added, “The contest is between Nigerians and the APC, the ruling party. Nigerians have lost confidence in INEC. INEC is no longer an impartial umpire.”
The summit drew several prominent opposition figures from across the country, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
