El-Rufai Warns Tinubu’s Reelection Will Cripple Nigeria, Declares Support For Opposition Coalition

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a damning warning that Nigeria’s social fabric could be irreparably damaged if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are re-elected in 2027.

Speaking on Saturday in Sokoto at a grassroots mobilisation rally organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), El-Rufai declared that Tinubu’s continuation in power would be a grave threat to Nigeria’s unity and survival.

“I believe that if we allow this party and the government to continue for a second term in office, what remains of Nigeria’s social capital will be destroyed, and we may not have a country at all,” he said. “This is a fight for our lives.”

The former FCT minister and founding member of the APC said his return to active politics is not about personal ambition but a patriotic duty to salvage the nation from what he described as the “failures of the current government.”

“I am not in politics to get anything for myself. I am in politics to serve. When the government does not serve the people, it is my duty as a senior citizen to come out, condemn it, and take steps to reverse the situation,” El-Rufai said.

He stressed that the Sokoto event marks the beginning of a national movement aimed at mobilising Nigerians to resist the APC’s return to power.

“We are in Sokoto to begin the process of mobilising Nigerians against the APC government everywhere, including the federal government in Abuja,” he stated.

El-Rufai, who officially defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in March 2025, said the ADC-led coalition represents a convergence of political forces determined to challenge what he called the incompetence and misrule of the ruling party.

His comments are likely to fuel debates within political circles ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the opposition ramps up efforts to unseat the APC.

El-Rufai’s sharp criticism comes amid growing discontent over economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived poor governance under the Tinubu administration.
