Kano Govt Demands Arrest of Ex-Governor Ganduje Over Alleged Militia Plot

The Kano State Government on Friday called for the immediate arrest and investigation of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje over alleged attempts to establish an unlawful militia group in the state.

The demand followed a State Executive Council meeting held on Thursday, where the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, briefed journalists on what he described as a troubling security development linked to the former governor.

Waiya said the government was alarmed that bandits invaded a Kano community and abducted several residents less than 48 hours after Ganduje publicly criticised the state’s decision to establish the proposed Khairul Nas Corps, which he claimed was a plot to create a militia.

According to the commissioner, the council believes Ganduje’s comments were capable of inciting unrest and may have emboldened criminal elements.

“The Council resolved that Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje should be investigated and arrested for allegedly attempting to create an illegal militia through the proposed Khairul Nas initiative,” Waiya declared.

He added that the state government would not tolerate any public statements or political actions capable of undermining peace, warning Senator Barau Jibrin and other political actors to desist from inflammatory remarks.

Waiya maintained that the Yusuf administration remains committed to preserving peace and stability across Kano, stressing that any attempt to orchestrate crisis would be met with lawful and decisive response.

He also commended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for their continued support in protecting lives and property in the state.

Ganduje, now the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been at loggerheads with the Kano government over various political and legal issues, including corruption allegations and the newly revived debate over security initiatives in the state.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that tensions between the current administration and the former governor have intensified in recent months, with multiple investigations and legal actions already underway.
