Former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, on Thursday formally defected to the All Progressives Congress, declaring support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Mimiko, who governed Ondo State between 2009 and 2017, announced his defection at the APC Ward 7 Secretariat in Ondo West Local Government Area, weeks after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party in April.
The former governor said his decision to join the ruling party was driven by a desire to contribute more meaningfully to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
He noted that despite prevailing economic challenges, the current administration’s policies were laying a solid foundation for long-term growth and national stability.
“I believe this is the time to align with efforts aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable development,” Mimiko said, while pledging loyalty to the APC and support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The defection marks a significant political shift in Ondo State, where Mimiko remains an influential figure with a strong grassroots following.
Welcoming him into the party, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, described Mimiko’s entry as a major boost to the party’s strength ahead of future elections.
Babatunde praised the former governor’s leadership record and contributions to governance, expressing confidence that his experience would further consolidate the APC’s dominance in the state.
