The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Aondona Dajoh, has resigned from his position, barely a year after assuming office.

Dajoh’s resignation was conveyed in a letter he personally signed and dated Sunday, August 24, 2025. The letter, which was sighted by PLATFORM TIMES, was addressed to members of the Assembly.

“I write to resign my position as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025. This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state,” the letter partly read.

The outgoing Speaker expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the trust reposed in him, describing his tenure as a privilege to serve as “first among equals.”

He further pledged loyalty to his legislative responsibilities, noting that he would remain committed to representing the people of Gboko West State Constituency.

Although Dajoh did not state specific reasons for his sudden resignation, insiders hinted at mounting political pressure within the Assembly, which has in recent months been polarised by intense leadership tussles.

His resignation marks a significant development in Benue politics, as it could pave the way for fresh power realignments in the State Assembly.

Dajoh emerged Speaker in June 2023 after a tightly contested leadership race, which saw him defeating other contenders amid controversy.

His sudden exit is expected to trigger fresh debate on the stability of the legislative arm in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, members of the Assembly were already holding emergency consultations to elect a new Speaker.
