The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for holding a political meeting in Zamfara State barely days after gunmen unleashed deadly attacks on communities in the state.
No fewer than 24 people were killed, 16 others injured, and at least 144 residents abducted in the latest wave of violence across several local government areas of Zamfara.
But despite the tragic incidents, the PDP Governors’ Forum converged on Gusau, the state capital, on Saturday, August 23, drawing outrage from opposition parties and civil society groups.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the PDP governors’ action as a “mockery of the victims” and a display of “cold insensitivity to the grief of ordinary Nigerians.”
“Instead of rallying around their colleague to help stop the orgy of killings, the governors chose to stage a political jamboree at the very scene of mass murder.
“The pictures of PDP governors grinning for cameras in full ceremonial robes, while the land still reeks of blood, are completely out of place and distasteful,” the statement read.
The ADC also accused Nigeria’s two dominant political parties—the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP—of prioritising power games over the welfare of citizens.
“This act alone underlines an important fact: neither the APC nor the incurably afflicted PDP care about the people and their suffering. Their only obsession is power and politics,” Abdullahi added.
The party further berated President Bola Tinubu for what it called his government’s “tepid response” to the escalating security crisis in Zamfara and Katsina states.
“The president’s silence in the face of this level of carnage is deeply troubling. Nigerians deserve more than indifference; they deserve leadership that protects lives and restores hope,” the ADC declared.
Zamfara, one of the states worst hit by banditry in recent years, has continued to suffer repeated waves of mass killings, kidnappings, and displacement despite several military operations launched in the region.
