The People’s Democratic Party governorship candidate in Osun State, Adedamola Adebayo, has urged party members to celebrate the Supreme Court’s ruling on withheld allocations to local government areas in the state, while warning against violence.

Adebayo emerged as the PDP candidate for the 2026 Osun governorship election on Tuesday in the exercise held in Osogbo where he polled 919 votes out of the 957 accredited delegates who participated.

In a statement obtained in Osogbo, the state capital, on Friday, Adebayo said the verdict has opened the doors of the local government secretariats to chairmen elected on the PDP platform in the February 25 election.

He, however, cautioned against lawlessness and vowed to fully utilise legal instruments to ensure that the council chairmen and councilors elected on the party’s platform assume leadership of the local government areas.

Adebayo commended the peaceful conduct of PDP members from the start of the matter until the Supreme Court delivered its ruling, noting that such discipline should continue to fast-track the development expected from those in leadership positions.

He said, “We received the verdict of the Supreme Court with joy as it eventually affirmed our position all the while. The PDP is the ultimate beneficiary of the sound judgement of the court and by extension, those elected on the platform of the party should also celebrate this victory.

“We have been very peaceful in the face of the provocation right from the start of this case until now that the Supreme Court delivered its verdict. People should not put up unlawful acts. We warn opposition in the state against violence.

“We urge our members to keep believing in the party and keep rejoicing over this victory. We must keep this spirit of togetherness alive as we move towards the next election.”

The PUNCH reports that the Supreme Court on Friday struck out a suit filed by the Osun State Government seeking to compel the Federal Government to release withheld allocations belonging to local government areas in the state.

A seven-member panel of the apex court, in a split decision of six to one, held that the legal action brought by the Attorney General of Osun State lacked competence.

Meanwhile, PUNCH had earlier reported that both the PDP and the leadership and members of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria compromising of chairmen elected on the platform of APC had claimed victory.

They described the verdict as “a welcome development.”
