El-Rufai Rules Out 2027 Ambition, Declares War On ‘Oppressors’

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has dismissed speculations that he is nursing any political ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that his focus is on mobilising Nigerians to end what he described as the reign of “oppressors.”

El-Rufai spoke in Kaduna on Wednesday while receiving defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“I am not contesting for anything. I don’t want to go to the Senate, and I am not contesting for any position,” the former governor declared.

“But that’s why I am calling on you, let us join hands and ensure we remove the oppressors.”

The former minister said although he had planned to withdraw from partisan politics after leaving office in 2023, the state of governance in Nigeria forced him to reconsider.

El-Rufai urged Nigerian youths to seize the ongoing voter registration exercise as a tool to change the country’s political direction.

“In Lagos and Osun, at least 600,000 people registered. But in Kaduna, only 60,000. Anyone who is 18 years old should go and register, even with their phone. Registration gives you the right to choose who governs you,” he told the gathering.

Since resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in March, El-Rufai has become one of its fiercest critics.

Earlier this month, he warned that Nigeria’s survival would be at risk if the APC retained power in 2027, describing the ruling party as “incompetent.”

He vowed to mobilise Nigerians to vote out the APC, saying the time had come for citizens to demand better governance.

“After my tenure as governor, I intended to rest. But given how things have turned out, we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics,” he added.
