2027: Ogun West must unite to clinch governorship — Senate Leader

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on Sunday charged political leaders, professionals and stakeholders in Ogun West Senatorial District to close ranks and forge a united front if the zone is to realise its long-standing ambition of producing the next governor of Ogun State in 2027.

Bamidele gave the charge in Ilaro while delivering the keynote address at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by Ogun West Professionals (for Yayi), themed, “The Power of Internal Coherence in Securing External Support: A Roadmap to Achieving Ogun West Governorship Ambition in 2027.”

He described Ogun State’s leadership succession as deeply skewed, arguing that Ogun West had suffered years of political exclusion, worsened by internal divisions that weakened its bargaining power within major political parties.

“Ogun West presents a peculiar case of inequality and political exclusion, where a section of the state has consistently been denied the topmost leadership position,” he said. “But beyond structural imbalance, internal fragmentation within the district has continued to undermine its chances.”

According to him, while other senatorial districts benefit from cohesive political blocs that enable consensus and strategic alignment, Ogun West has often struggled with elite divisions, resulting in multiple aspirants, fractured votes and diminished influence during party primaries.

He warned that failure to achieve unity ahead of the 2027 polls could once again open the door for external political forces to dictate outcomes.
“Internal coherence is not optional; it is indispensable.

Unity is political capital — it unlocks party confidence, cross-district alliances, elite endorsements and statewide voter legitimacy,” Bamidele stressed.

The Senate Leader outlined key steps to reposition Ogun West, including the formation of a unified council of stakeholders, emergence of a single consensus candidate, development of an inclusive regional narrative, institutionalised grassroots mobilisation, strategic alliances across districts and presentation of a governance-ready policy blueprint.

He added, “The prolonged marginalisation of Ogun West is not accidental. It is the product of structural exclusion and internal disunity.

The way forward demands urgent elite coordination, disciplined messaging and strategic maturity.”

Earlier, Chairman of the Steering Committee, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose, said the Ogun West Professionals had mobilised resources and networks across the district to promote unity and strengthen the push for the governorship in 2027.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Isiaq Salako, urged leaders in the district to go beyond the rhetoric of “it is our turn” and instead engage other senatorial zones with persuasive arguments rooted in equity, competence and statewide development.

In separate remarks, Apostle Abiodun Sanyaolu from Ogun Central, Senator Lekan Mustapha and Prof. Yemi Oke described the 2027 election as a historic opportunity to correct long-standing political imbalance by allowing Ogun West to produce the governor.

They expressed confidence in Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, describing him as a bridge-builder whose legislative and developmental interventions cut across Ogun’s three senatorial districts.

Highlights of the meeting included an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term and the adoption of Senator Adeola as Ogun West’s preferred governorship candidate. An award was also presented to

Adeola, who was represented by the Ogun State Commissioner for Budget and Planning,  Olaolu Olabimtan.
