The Nigeria Data Protection Commission says the country’s data-protection ecosystem is now worth more than N16.2 bn, a sign of how quickly compliance and regulatory oversight are expanding alongside the digital economy.
The figure was disclosed at a media training workshop in Lagos recently, where the commission outlined progress under the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023. Since the law came into force, regulators have stepped up licensing, enforcement and compliance monitoring across both public institutions and private firms, reflecting growing concern over how personal data is collected, stored and shared.
The regulator said it has licensed 307 Data Protection Compliance Organisations and registered 38,677 data controllers and processors of major importance, reflecting a sharp rise in regulatory participation under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
More than 8,155 compliance audit returns have been filed across the public and private sectors, the commission said.
The NDPC has also concluded 246 investigations into privacy breaches nationwide, resulting in 11 enforcement actions that included fines and remediation orders. High-profile cases include a N766.2m penalty imposed on MultiChoice Nigeria in July 2025 for unlawful cross-border transfers of subscriber data and other violations, as well as a N555.8m fine levied on Fidelity Bank in 2024 over improper data processing and the use of non-transparent tracking tools.
The commission said the enforcement actions have generated N5.2 bn in compliance-related revenue remitted to the federal government, even though the agency is not designed primarily as a revenue generator.
It added that the data-protection ecosystem has created more than 23,000 jobs, contributing to employment growth as Nigeria’s digital economy expands.
The NDPC’s National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Vincent Olatunji, who spoke virtually, said the figures underscore a deliberate shift toward aggressive, enforcement-driven oversight. He emphasised that building trust through accountability is essential to Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a $1tn digital economy, noting that strong data protection policies are critical to attracting foreign direct investment and fostering cross-border partnerships.
“Enforcement is the backbone of privacy protection. By concluding 246 investigations and applying meaningful consequences, we are protecting citizens and creating the secure environment needed for innovation, foreign investment, and sustainable growth,” Dr Olatunji said.
The NDPC also outlined its ongoing commitment to expanding compliance monitoring across all sectors, signalling that regulatory oversight will continue to strengthen as the digital economy expands.
With these developments, Nigeria’s data protection landscape is now seen as a critical enabler of business confidence, job creation, and economic growth, providing both citizens and companies with increased assurances of privacy and accountability.
