Kano Govt Kicks Against Deportation Of Northerners From Abuja

The Kano State Government has condemned the repeated deportation of Northerners from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, describing the action as unconstitutional and demeaning.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Disabled Persons, Hajiya Amina Sani-Abdullahi, in a statement on Thursday, said the government observed with concern that in the last four weeks, several citizens from Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, and Kaduna states had been rounded up and forcibly relocated from Abuja to Kano.

She argued that the exercise violated the constitutional right of every Nigerian to live and work in any part of the country, provided they do not constitute a security threat.

“The FCT is not the property of a single state or region; it is the common heritage of all Nigerians and a home for all,” Sani-Abdullahi declared.

The commissioner stressed that if the FCT Administration considered certain individuals to be engaging in “undesirable activities,” the humane approach would be rehabilitation, empowerment programmes, or economic support — not forced deportation.

“In Kano, we host people from all parts of Nigeria, including Rivers State and the South-East. They live, work, and contribute to our economy without discrimination. This is the true spirit of national unity,” she added.

Sani-Abdullahi further alleged that some deportees were kept in detention for over 10 days under inhumane conditions, with only one meal served daily. She described the treatment as degrading and unacceptable in a democratic society.

She maintained that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf would not tolerate the humiliation of its citizens and called on the FCT authorities to put an end to what she termed “unconstitutional deportations.”

“We urge the FCT Administration to reconsider its approach and adopt lawful, humane, and constructive measures going forward,” the statement read.
