The Rivers State Police Command has busted a kidnapping syndicate, recovering ransom funds and a pump-action gun while fatally wounding two suspects during a gun battle with operatives.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko said the operation reflects the Command’s zero-tolerance policy on crime and its determination to create a secure environment for all residents to live and thrive.

The breakthrough follows the successful arrest of two suspects involved in the kidnapping of a female victim and three others on January 19, 2026, at Elele Waterside, Etche Local Government Area.

“This breakthrough is part of our sustained efforts to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities within the state,” Iringe-Koko said.

“Acting on credible intelligence, our operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit intercepted and arrested two suspects along Ozuzu/Apara Link Road, Etche LGA, on January 22. They were in possession of ₦2,383,000 as part of the ransom paid by the victims’ families, as well as a pump-action gun.”

The suspects were identified as Abdullahi Ibrahim, 23, from Avara LGA, Nasarawa State, and Mohammed Hashim, 27, from Tafawa Balewa LGA, Bauchi State.

Preliminary interrogation revealed the suspects’ involvement in multiple kidnappings, including the abduction of two other female victims from Akpoku Community on January 8, 2026.

Irinige-Koko said the gang’s activities had previously led to the tragic killing of a youth who attempted to pay a ransom of ₦3.8 million.

“This highlights how dangerous these criminal networks are, and why proactive intelligence-led operations are critical to saving lives,” she added.

During investigations, the suspects led police operatives to their hideouts, but other gang members resisted, prompting a fierce gun battle.

Two suspects were fatally wounded, while others escaped into nearby bushes, sustaining bullet injuries.

“Exhibits recovered from the suspects include one pump-action gun and ₦2,383,000

“Our operatives have displayed exceptional bravery, and we are intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects, who are currently at large with operational weapons, ” Iringe-Koko said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, commended the operation and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to safety.

“I commend our officers for their dedication. Rivers State will remain a hostile environment for criminal elements. We will leave no stone unturned in pursuing perpetrators, who will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he said.

CP Adepoju urged the public to assist the police by reporting anyone receiving treatment for gunshot injuries in suspicious circumstances.

“Community support is vital. Together, we can ensure Rivers State remains safe and secure for all residents,” he added.
