Plateau Gov Mutfwang Set To Dump PDP For APC Over ‘Political Risks’ — Aide

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State is set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, citing deepening internal crises and mounting political risks within the opposition party, his aide has said.

The governor’s Political Adviser, Istifanus Nwansat, disclosed the planned defection on Monday in Abuja, saying the decision followed a careful assessment of the prevailing political realities ahead of future electoral contests.

According to him, the protracted leadership crisis rocking the PDP has weakened the party’s capacity to offer a viable platform for serious political actors, making continued stay increasingly unsafe for elected officials.

Nwansat said, “From our assessment and analysis of all available options, we have concluded that the safest decision for us today, with the least risk factor, is to move into the APC. That is why the governor is taking this step.”

He added that the PDP’s internal disarray had eroded confidence among its members, describing the party as an unrealistic platform for politicians seeking stability and electoral success.

The aide further explained that Mutfwang’s move would also align Plateau State more closely with the political direction of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the governor believed cooperation with the Federal Government was in the best interest of the state.

“As a leader, the governor believes it is reasonable to align his people with the President. Even though we are members of the PDP, we recognise and appreciate the efforts of Mr President in putting things right,” Nwansat said.

He maintained that the planned defection was driven by strategic considerations rather than personal ambition, stressing that the governor was acting to safeguard Plateau’s political future amid shifting national dynamics.

The anticipated move, if confirmed, would mark another high-profile defection from the PDP and further underscore the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape.
