Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has said he left the Labour Party after being informed that the Independent National Electoral Commission would not recognise the party’s leadership as long as he remained a member.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, made the disclosure on Sunday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during the OBIDIENT Conference and official declaration for the African Democratic Congress.

Speaking at the event themed, “Activating the PO Effect in ADC,” the former governor alleged that there were moves to exclude him from future ballots.

“Democracy must work. I left the Labour Party when I was informed that, as long as I remained in the party, INEC would not recognise its leadership, and that the Federal Government did not want me on the ballot paper,” Obi said.

He, however, declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that no political force would deter him.

“I will contest the coming election—even if it is held in their bedroom—and if they refuse to transmit results, we will transmit them ourselves,” he stated.

Obi stressed that election results must be electronically transmitted in real time, warning that any official who fails to transmit results would be held accountable.

He called on Nigerians to unite ahead of the 2027 polls, describing his political mission as “Operation Rescue Nigeria,” which he said was aimed at salvaging the country from decades of misgovernance.

According to him, his administration, if elected, would prioritise investment in education and healthcare, noting that nations develop by committing resources to human capital development.

On corruption, Obi promised to reduce the menace by 60 per cent, adding that public office holders and their families must remain above board.

Citing his tenure as governor of Anambra State, he said he distanced his family from government privileges while in office.

“When I became governor of Anambra State, I advised my wife to forget about the Office of the First Lady.

“I approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy of government lands, but none for myself or my family. If you find any, petition me to the appropriate authority,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr Tanko Yunusa, Global Coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement, urged supporters to mobilise across the country in preparation for the 2027 general election, reiterating the group’s commitment to a transparent and participatory democratic process.

Obi’s latest declaration signals an early realignment of political forces ahead of 2027, as opposition figures intensify consultations and grassroots mobilisation across party lines.
