A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Toyin Amuzu, has declared his intention to contest the House of Representatives seat for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, vowing to pursue policies that will ease hardship and prioritise the welfare of the people.
Amuzu made his declaration on Thursday at the PDP secretariat in Ago-Egun, Abeokuta, where he pledged to deliver purposeful representation and tackle what he described as “politics of plunder” in Ogun State.
The PDP stalwart said his decision to join the race was informed by growing economic hardship and the need to restore public confidence in governance.
He criticised the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress, blaming them for the worsening living conditions of Nigerians.
“Our people are going through unprecedented hardship. The cost of fuel has risen beyond reach, food prices are skyrocketing daily and poverty is no longer a statistic but a harsh reality in our homes,” he said.
Amuzu added that his ambition was driven by a desire to provide responsive leadership and improve the standard of living of his constituents.
“It is a priority to ensure our communities improve and our people are better. I am going to the National Assembly to legislate for the real advancement of my constituents,” he said.
The aspirant described the 2027 elections as a critical turning point for the country, urging citizens to resist what he called the creeping dominance of a one-party system.
“2027 will not just be another election, it will be a decisive moment. We must rise, get our voter cards, come out en masse to vote and protect our votes to ensure they count,” he said.
He outlined his legislative agenda to include social security, healthcare, education and community safety, stressing that governance must directly impact the lives of the people.
Amuzu also cautioned against vote-buying and monetised politics, warning that such practices undermine credible leadership.
“Sincere leadership is not built on sharing money or rice. Those who invest heavily to secure office often see governance as a business and the people suffer for it,” he said.
Reflecting on his background, the Asiwaju Leragun Egba said his experience in private enterprise had been fulfilling but noted that the plight of the people compelled him to seek public office.
“If my goal was wealth or power, I could have joined those sharing the nation’s resources among themselves. But this is about service,” he added.
He expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances in the 2027 polls, despite internal challenges, insisting that the party remains committed to its people-oriented ideology.
The event was attended by party leaders, including a former lawmaker, Hon. Fasiu Bakene, and the state secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Semiu Sodipo, among others.
Political observers say Amuzu’s entry into the race is likely to reshape the contest in Abeokuta South as momentum builds ahead of the 2027 general elections.
