Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has congratulated the newly installed 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, advising him to ensure that traditional leadership does not conflict with political authority.
Obasanjo, in a congratulatory message personally signed and released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Wednesday, stressed that the Olubadan’s position is one of great responsibility that requires humility, wisdom, and tolerance.
The statement noted that although Obasanjo is currently in New York for the 80th United Nations General Assembly, he joined millions of Ibadan indigenes and Nigerians to celebrate Ladoja’s ascension to the revered throne.
Quoting Yoruba royal prayers, the former President wrote: “Ade a pe lori, bata a pe lese” (May your crown endure, may your reign be long), adding that the formal coronation ceremony was only a matter of formality following the earlier announcement of Ladoja as Olubadan.
In the letter dated July 14, 2025, Obasanjo urged the monarch to steer clear of political rivalry, insisting that tradition and politics must be handled in separate spheres.
He said, “It is an exalted and responsible position to be traditional ruler of all Ibadan people. It requires humility, patience, divine wisdom, tolerance and advice from wide and varied quarters to succeed. Traditional rulership does not compete or conflict with political rulership.”
Obasanjo prayed for God’s guidance and direction for the new monarch, wishing him a peaceful and impactful reign over Ibadanland.
