The 2023 governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Kwara State, Hakeem Lawal, has said the All Progressives Congress will remain dominant in the state’s politics beyond the 2027 general elections.
He dismissed the likelihood of another political upheaval similar to the 2019 “Otoge” movement in the state, saying the ruling party still enjoys grassroots support and a political structure capable of sustaining its hold on power.
Speaking with Sunday PUNCH on Friday, the former SDP flagbearer described his return to the APC as a strategic decision driven by the need to contribute more effectively to governance and development in the state, rather than by personal political ambition.
Lawal dismissed claims that his defection was tied to permutations ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that his decision was based on a reassessment of the SDP’s capacity to deliver meaningful governance outcomes.
“Politics, for me, has always been about impact and service, not sentiment. After consultations across the state, it became clear that my experience and structure would be better utilised within the APC.
“Every politician has ambition, but personal ambition must not override collective interest. If 2027 was my sole focus, I would have returned much earlier,” he added.
The politician described the APC as his “political home,” explaining that earlier disagreements which led to his exit from the party had been resolved through dialogue and reconciliation.
Lawal noted that ongoing reconciliation efforts within the APC were aimed at strengthening party unity and bringing back aggrieved stakeholders who left after the 2019 political realignment.
He said, “I left based on principle, particularly around membership issues, but those concerns have now been addressed. Politics should not be driven by bitterness.
“There are deliberate moves to rebuild trust. A united party strengthens governance and improves service delivery.”
Addressing speculations about a possible repeat of the 2019 “Otoge” political wave, Lawal said the current opposition lacked the cohesion and momentum required to stage a similar political movement.
He, however, cautioned the APC against complacency, stressing the need for continuous grassroots engagement and responsiveness to public concerns.
“The party must keep listening to the people. Sustaining political control depends on performance and connection with the grassroots,” he said.
Lawal also revealed that his political structure across the state moved with him to the APC, describing it as a collective decision that reflects his grassroots influence.
He added that his immediate focus would be on strengthening the party, mobilising voters and mentoring younger politicians, while contributing to policy discussions that would advance development in Kwara State.
