The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Tuesday presented the Aerodrome Certificate for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), marking a key milestone in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The presentation, which took place at the NCAA’s corporate headquarters in Abuja, signalled that the airport has met the required safety and operational standards.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo, who was represented by the Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, Ahmad Abba, described the certification as “a significant milestone in Nigeria’s aviation sector.”

He said the development reflects the agency’s commitment to safety and global best practices, noting that “the certification aligns with International Civil Aviation Organization standards and recommended practices.”

Najomo added that the process also positioned Nigeria ahead of upcoming international audits, stating that it comes “as the country prepares for ICAO Continuous Monitoring Approach activities.”

He commended FAAN for its role in the process, saying the authority demonstrated “cooperation and dedication throughout the five-phased certification process.”

In her remarks, the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, represented by the Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Agunbiade, described the certification as a collective achievement.

She acknowledged “the role of the DGCA, the technical teams from NCAA and FAAN, and other stakeholders whose contributions made the achievement possible.”

Kuku assured that FAAN would maintain standards going forward, stating that the authority “will sustain compliance with regulatory requirements and continue to improve operational standards across its airports.”

The certification of the Enugu airport is expected to enhance safety oversight and strengthen Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation standards.
