Former Man United striker, Wayne Rooney has backed Liam Rosenior for the Chelsea manager’s job, describing the Strasbourg head coach as one of the best coaches he has ever worked with and insisting he deserves the opportunity to take charge at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior, 41, has emerged as a leading candidate to become Chelsea’s new head coach, with the Premier League club sharing ownership with French side Strasbourg. The Englishman is currently in charge of the Ligue 1 outfit, having joined them in 2024.

As reported by BBC Sport on Monday, Rooney and Rosenior worked closely together at Derby County between 2021 and 2022, when Rosenior served as Rooney’s assistant during a turbulent period for the club.

Following Rooney’s departure, Rosenior stepped up as Derby’s interim manager in League One before moving on to a permanent role at Hull City.

Speaking on the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, the former England captain was full of praise for his former colleague.

“He’s taken chances, and hopefully that pays off because I think Liam is as good a coach as I’ve ever worked with.

“His detail, how he approaches the day-to-day, he’s as good as I’ve worked with,” Rooney added.

Rooney also highlighted how important Rosenior was to his own managerial setup at Derby, crediting him with the tactical and coaching side of the role.

“Liam was so important for me. He was incredible in his coaching ability. I was more of the manager and dealing with players and everything,” he stressed.

PUNCH Online had reported that Chelsea have begun the process of appointing a new head coach following the departure of Enzo Maresca, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading contender for the role.
