Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has declared that he has no regrets over decisions taken during his tenure, despite facing multiple criminal charges.
Malami made the assertion shortly after regaining freedom from custody, vowing to vigorously defend himself against allegations of money laundering and other offences brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The ex-minister is standing trial alongside his wife, Asabe, and son, Abdulaziz, on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged financial crimes.
The defendants, however, have pleaded not guilty.
Speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa on Wednesday, Malami described his ordeal in custody as an act of divine will, insisting that he remained resolute in clearing his name.
“I have spent time in EFCC custody, Kuje Prison, and with the DSS. I believe it is all God’s will, and I accept it, but I will defend myself against the allegations,” he said.
.Malami was initially released from the Kuje Custodial Centre before being rearrested on January 19 by operatives of the Department of State Services.
He had, on January 21, accused the security agency of denying him access to his family members and legal representatives during his detention.
Subsequently, on February 27, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted him and his son bail in the sum of N200m each over alleged terrorism-related offences. He has since met the bail conditions.
The former AGF also alleged that his fundamental rights were violated during the investigation, claiming that security operatives conducted searches on his residences and business premises without prior notice.
“Constitutionally, I have the right to be present during a search to oversee the investigation of my property and to know exactly what is being looked for or taken,” he stated.
Despite the ongoing trial and controversies surrounding his arrest and detention, Malami maintained that he stood by his actions while in office.
“I have no regrets regarding what I did during my time as a minister,” he said.
