Former Senator, Iyabo Olusola Obasanjo, has dismissed criticisms of her appearance, insisting that competence and capacity—not aesthetics—should define her governorship ambition ahead of the 2027 elections in Ogun Stat.

Obasanjo, who spoke during a radio interview on Paramount 94.5 FM in Abeokuta, said comments about her fashion choices were misplaced and irrelevant to governance.

“I am not contesting a beauty pageant. My fashion sense will not guarantee good governance, but my skills, experience and competence will,” she said.

The former lawmaker stressed that her aspiration to lead the state was driven by a desire to deliver purposeful leadership and institutional reforms, urging the public to assess her based on her track record and vision rather than superficial considerations.

Describing the governorship race as a serious undertaking, Obasanjo said it required intellectual depth, administrative capacity and a clear development agenda.

Beyond addressing critics, the aspirant outlined her policy priorities, with a strong focus on education. She called for improved welfare, training and motivation for teachers, describing them as critical drivers of national development.

She also highlighted the role of members of the National Youth Service Corps in supporting the education sector, particularly those posted to schools, and urged better support for them.

Obasanjo further advocated increased investment in entrepreneurship and vocational training, noting that equipping young people with practical skills was essential to tackling unemployment and driving economic growth.

She added that greater attention must also be given to key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture and enterprise development to ensure inclusive growth across the state.

Her remarks come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State, with stakeholders projecting a keen contest among aspirants positioning themselves on issues of governance, development and economic transformation.
