No fewer than 5,000 women in Ogun State have declared support for the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu, citing what they described as women-friendly policies and inclusive governance under his administration.
The women also unanimously backed the senatorial ambition of Governor Dapo Abiodun, expressing confidence in his capacity to attract more developmental projects to Ogun East Senatorial District.
The endorsement was announced during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration held at the Royal Pavilion, Ijebu-Ode, and organised by the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The event drew female political office holders and stakeholders from the 20 local government areas of the state.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said Ogun women remained resolute in their support for Tinubu’s second term, describing his Renewed Hope Agenda as impactful, particularly for women.
She noted that policies implemented by both the Federal Government and the Ogun State Government had improved women’s access to economic opportunities, social inclusion, and participation in governance.
“We are proud of the measurable gains recorded under these administrations and reaffirm our unflinching support as they advance to the next level,” she said.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, said the large turnout of women at the event underscored their growing unity and influence in public affairs.
Adeleye added that the celebration coincided with activities marking the 50th anniversary of Ogun State, noting that women had consistently contributed to the state’s socio-economic development over the decades through commerce, family support systems, and community leadership.
She commended Tinubu for reforms aimed at economic recovery and inclusive growth, while also lauding Abiodun’s women-focused initiatives under the ISEYA development agenda.
The commissioner further highlighted the contributions of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Initiative, as well as the interventions of the state’s First Lady, Bamidele Abiodun, in advancing women empowerment programmes.
She, however, urged women to translate their numerical strength into political power by actively participating in the electoral process.
“The responsibility for shaping a better future lies not only in our numbers but in our Permanent Voter Cards. Women must stay united and support leaders who recognise their value,” she said.
As part of the event, the state government announced financial empowerment for women, with 50 beneficiaries receiving N200,000 each, while another 500 women got N50,000 grants.
Delivering a lecture on the theme, “Give to Gain,” a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Abiodun Olujimi, described the low level of female political representation in Nigeria as a “national crisis.”
She noted that women currently account for about two per cent of political office holders, stressing the need for urgent structural reforms to address systemic barriers limiting women’s participation.
Olujimi called on women to support credible leaders and build stronger networks, adding that collective action remained key to breaking entrenched inequalities.
“International Women’s Day is not just a celebration but a time for reflection and action towards securing a better future for the Nigerian girl-child,” she said.
