The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, on Tuesday apologised to Nigerians over the persistent electricity outages across the country, admitting that the situation has imposed severe hardship on citizens and businesses.
Adelabu, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja, said the Federal Government was taking urgent steps to reverse the declining power supply, assuring that improvements would be noticeable in the coming weeks.
The minister acknowledged that the erratic electricity supply had disrupted economic activities, education, and industrial operations nationwide, stressing that the apology was necessary given the scale of the impact.
“I want to apologise, coming from me as Minister of Power, for this temporary issue that is leading to hardship being experienced,” he said.
He attributed the outages to factors beyond the government’s immediate control but maintained that efforts were ongoing round the clock to stabilise the sector.
“It is not our wish to find ourselves in this situation, but there are factors that are actually beyond our control. We are working 24/7 to ensure that we return to the trajectory we recorded in 2025,” Adelabu added.
The minister recalled that the power sector witnessed relative stability in 2025, earning commendation from Nigerians, and expressed optimism that the country would surpass that performance this year.
He further assured that power generation and distribution would improve significantly, revealing that the government was targeting increased output before the end of 2026.
According to him, “In the next few weeks, all this will be over. Power generation will improve, distribution will improve, and we are working towards achieving 6,000 megawatts before the end of the year.”
Despite the assurances, many Nigerians have continued to express frustration over prolonged blackouts, which have forced households and businesses to rely heavily on alternative energy sources, thereby increasing the cost of living and doing business.
The latest apology comes amid growing concerns over the stability of the national grid and the ability of the government to deliver on its power sector promises.
