A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has said that key political figures who contributed to the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 are now poised to align with the party to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Momodu, who spoke on Wednesday during an interview on Arise News Morning Show, said the bloc includes prominent politicians such as former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai; ex-Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; and former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal.
He described the group as a strategic force capable of influencing the outcome of the next presidential election if effectively mobilised by the ADC.
According to him, defeating an incumbent president like Tinubu would require more than popularity, noting that political strategy and coalition-building would be critical.
“We have in ADC today two of the leading presidential contestants in the last election, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel,” Momodu said.
Drawing parallels with past political developments, he urged the party to revisit the strategy that led to Buhari’s victory in 2015, stressing that a similar alignment of interests and political actors could prove decisive in 2027.
Momodu, who openly declared his preference for Atiku as the ADC presidential candidate, argued that the former vice president’s political experience and regional advantage could strengthen the party’s chances.
He also claimed that some members of the political bloc that supported Tinubu’s emergence in 2023 were now disenchanted and could be persuaded to back the ADC.
“The people who worked for Tinubu to become president were partly in Buhari’s camp and many of them feel sidelined. That team is waiting and can be captured,” he added.
The media entrepreneur further advised the ADC to focus on regions where there is growing dissatisfaction, particularly in the North, noting that Atiku’s emergence could galvanise support from the North-East.
Political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections have continued to generate debate, with parties intensifying consultations and repositioning for what is expected to be a keenly contested race.
