Mother of eight who delivered quintuplets in Kano dies |

A mother of eight who delivered quintuplets in Kano, the Kano State capital, Hafsatu Yusuf, is dead.

According to available information as at press time on Thursday, she was confirmed dead hours after she birthed the five babies.

Hafsatu delivered the five babies: Three boys and two girls, at the state government-owned Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar, confirmed she died from severe postpartum bleeding despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life.

Abubakar said she developed complications shortly after delivery and could not be revived.

He said: “The patient developed complications after delivery and despite all medical interventions to save her life, unfortunately, she succumbed.

“Although earlier medical scans indicated that the expectant mother was carrying triplets, additional babies were delivered as labour progressed, resulting in the birth of quintuplets – three boys and two girls.”

Abubakar said the newborns are currently receiving intensive care at the hospital.

The state government had earlier taken responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her babies.
