Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has reportedly spent his period in detention engaging in religious devotion and intellectual activities, according to a close associate.
The associate, Bashir Garba Sufyan, disclosed on his X handle that the former governor completed the Holy Qur’an, observed fasting throughout his stay in custody, and also read about 10 books, while writing some works during the period.
“Alhamdulillah, Mallam is home with his family, friends and associates. The first thing he told us was that, since his detention, he had been fasting until yesterday,” Sufyan wrote.
“He also completed the Holy Qur’an while in detention, read 10 books, and has written some as well. And you wonder why he’s great and undefeated.”
El-Rufai was recently released by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), where he had been held since February 19, 2026, following earlier interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The ICPC had arraigned him on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering before a Federal High Court in Kaduna. His bail application had been adjourned till March 31 before his eventual release.
Sources confirmed that the former governor’s release came hours after the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt.
An associate of the ex-governor confirmed his release but declined to provide further details, while his son, Bashir El-Rufai, also verified that his father had returned home.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu have extended condolences to El-Rufai over the death of his mother.
Their reactions, however, have sparked mixed responses on social media, with some Nigerians describing the unfolding events as a matter largely confined to the political elite.
El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations against him.
