Kwankwaso Dumps NNPP, Moves To ADC Amid Rift With Kano Governor

A former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to defect to the African Democratic Congress as part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the planned move, expected to be formalised on Monday, follows weeks of consultations between Kwankwaso, leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement and top figures within the ADC.

Sources familiar with the development said the former minister had held a series of strategic meetings with opposition stakeholders to build a broad-based coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Among those he reportedly engaged are the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson.

The consultations, it was learnt, are part of a wider opposition strategy to forge a formidable alliance capable of unseating the APC at the federal level.

The development comes amid a deepening political crisis between Kwankwaso and his political protégé, Abba Yusuf.

Yusuf had recently defected from the NNPP to the APC alongside several lawmakers and appointees, a move that reportedly triggered sharp divisions within the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Kwankwaso had publicly distanced himself from the defection, describing it as a betrayal, a position that has further exposed cracks within the political structure he built over the years.

Party insiders say the latest move signals a significant shift in northern political dynamics and could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
