A United States-based physician and board-certified paediatrician, Bolaji Odusina, has joined the African Democratic Congress as she declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.
Odusina, who recently concluded consultations on her political future, formally announced her decision in Abeokuta on Saturday, expressing readiness to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in what she described as a contest driven by ideas and credibility rather than political influence.
The governorship hopeful said although the APC remains dominant in the state and is home to influential figures, she was optimistic that “underdogs” could still emerge victorious.
“I am fully aware that our party will be up against the ruling APC and some very prominent political figures. Many see this as a David-and-Goliath scenario—but history has shown us how that story ends,” she said.
She argued that years of unmet expectations under the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun had left residents yearning for a new direction in governance.
According to her, symbolic gestures by those in power have failed to address systemic challenges confronting the state.
“After decades of disappointment, the people are ready for something different. They are ready for real, seismic change. Token gestures—such as giving one person a car out of a million—do not solve systemic problems,” Odusina stated.
The paediatrician criticised what she termed a “suffering-and-smiling” approach to governance, insisting that Ogun State requires leadership committed to fixing critical sectors including infrastructure, healthcare, education, job creation, and security.
“What the people want now is leadership that fixes systems—roads, healthcare, education, jobs, security, and opportunities for all,” she added.
Odusina linked the state’s challenges—ranging from poor road infrastructure and inadequate medical supplies to weak healthcare delivery and economic hardship—to the governance style of the APC.
She, however, maintained that the 2027 election would not be determined by financial strength or political structures but by competence and trust.
“This contest is not about money or political muscle. It is about ideas, character, competence, and trust. I am confident that the people of Ogun State are ready to make that choice,” she said.
Explaining her decision to join the ADC, Odusina said the party aligns with her vision of inclusive and people-centred governance.
“I chose the ADC because it aligns with my vision of inclusive, people-centred governance… The party offers a credible platform for fresh ideas, responsible leadership, and genuine service to the people of Ogun State,” she added.
The aspirant, who hails from Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun East Senatorial District, said her decision to run was influenced by her experiences in grassroots healthcare delivery.
She noted that through her initiative, Doctors Without Prejudice, she had conducted free medical outreaches in communities such as Odogbolu, Abeokuta North, and Ijebu-Igbo, reaching thousands of residents.
Odusina unveiled a 12-point agenda anchored on 24-hour grassroots healthcare services, free and compulsory basic education, job creation through industrialisation, agricultural development, as well as youth and women empowerment.
She pledged to provide practical and sustainable solutions across key sectors if elected.
