A leading governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Iyabo Obasanjo, has called for stronger collaboration among political stakeholders to curb rising tensions and prevent electoral violence ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Obasanjo made the call on Friday, during a consultative visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Abeokuta, where she stressed the need for continuous dialogue among political actors to ensure peaceful elections.
Speaking during the engagement, the former senator noted that fostering open communication across party lines would help address grievances early and reduce the likelihood of conflict during elections.
She said, “Collaboration reduces tension because it creates room for dialogue and open discussion of issues. Through this, problems can be addressed ahead of time, ensuring that on election day there is no violence or conflict. That, I believe, is the essence of empathetic collaboration.”
Obasanjo added that mutual understanding among political parties and stakeholders remains critical to deepening democracy and sustaining political stability in the state.
Meanwhile, the State Chairman of IPAC, Abayomi Sanyaolu, disclosed that the council currently recognises only three governorship aspirants who have formally engaged with the body.
According to him, the recognised aspirants are Obasanjo, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, and Sarafa Tunji Isola.
Sanyaolu explained that IPAC’s recognition is strictly based on formal interaction with the council, noting that aspirants who fail to present themselves before the body would not be acknowledged.
He described IPAC as a unifying platform comprising leaders of all registered political parties in the state, where governorship hopefuls are expected to present their programmes and vision for governance.
“As it stands today, we recognise only three aspirants. We have Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, and Sarafa Tunji Isola. We do not have four or five for now,” he said.
He added, “If you have not stepped into the IPAC secretariat to introduce yourself and engage stakeholders, then you are not known to this body. We expect all serious aspirants, regardless of party affiliation, to come forward.
“Our concern at this stage is to identify serious contenders and understand their plans. At the appropriate time, we will deliberate further based on what each aspirant brings to the table.”
The IPAC chairman emphasised that early engagement with stakeholders would help prevent a recurrence of past electoral challenges and promote a more credible and peaceful election process in Ogun State.
