Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday formally elevated three high-ranking chiefs in Ibadanland to the status of Obas in absentia, despite their absence at the official coronation ceremony held at Mapo Hall, Ibadan.
The governor said the decision to proceed with the installation without the physical presence of the affected chiefs was necessary to prevent a vacuum and sustain the long-established structure of the Ibadan traditional system.
Those elevated are Chief Kola Babalola (SAN), the Ekaarun Olubadan; High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, the Ekerin Balogun; and High Chief Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, the Ekaarun Balogun and Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District.
The trio had reportedly communicated their inability to attend the ceremony, citing varying reasons and requesting a postponement.
Babalola was said to be indisposed due to health concerns, Alli cited national legislative duties, while Adewoyin requested more time to prepare for the transition and celebration.
Notwithstanding their absence, the state government proceeded with the coronation, a move that also coincided with the absence of some prominent traditional rulers.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, was represented by the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, were also not in attendance.
Represented by his deputy, Chief Adebayo Lawal, Makinde described the event as a significant moment reflecting the fusion of governance and cultural heritage.
He said, “We are not merely gathered to witness a ceremonial rite; we are here to affirm a system that has, for generations, provided structure, order and identity to Ibadanland.
The conferment of beaded crowns reflects a tradition that continues to evolve while preserving its core values.”
Makinde noted that the exercise was backed by the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, which empowers the governor to confer crowns on elevated chiefs. He maintained that the action was taken in the interest of continuity within the traditional hierarchy.
He charged the newly crowned Obas to uphold integrity and promote unity, warning that their conduct would influence public confidence in the traditional institution.
In his remarks, Oba Ajibola commended the governor for adhering to the established ascension process but cautioned traditional rulers against partisan political involvement.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, described the development as a milestone in the evolution of Ibadan’s traditional institution, while the President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Ajeniyi Ajewole, lauded the government’s adherence to legal provisions guiding chieftaincy matters.
The event drew attendance from members of the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Council of Obas, legal practitioners, political figures, and other dignitaries, underscoring its cultural and political significance.
