Former England striker Gary Lineker has expressed confidence that Arsenal will secure the Premier League title this season, despite recent disappointments in domestic cup competitions.
The Gunners were aiming for a historic quadruple but suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. Over the weekend, they were also knocked out of the FA Cup, losing 2-1 to Southampton in the quarter-finals, raising questions about whether their season is faltering.
Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast on Sunday, Lineker acknowledged the challenges but urged patience.
“It’s been a tough two weeks for Arsenal. People are asking if they’re panicking or if it’s a crisis; it’s definitely a little wobble. The next game or two are hugely important for Arsenal, they need to steady the ship, there’s no doubt about it,” he said.
Arsenal currently hold a nine-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League and face Sporting in the Champions League quarter-finals.
“They’ve got a huge lead in the title race, but it’s squeaky bum time. I think they will be fine, I think they will win the league, which will still be the main thing for them. The Champions League would obviously be an enormous bonus because it’s a competition they’ve never won,” added.
Despite the cup setbacks, Lineker believes Arsenal remain strong favourites for the league, and their focus on maintaining their lead could still see them secure a historic domestic campaign.
