The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a blogger and social media influencer, Justice Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, over allegations of inciting soldiers and attempting to misinform the public.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said the arrest followed complaints raised by some soldiers regarding feeding and welfare issues, which were shared on social media by the influencer.
According to the Army, the matter is being investigated for alleged breach of the Armed Forces’ Social Media Policy.
The statement noted that preliminary findings indicated that the soldiers engaged Chidiebere in discussions on a wide range of issues, during which he allegedly encouraged discontent within the system.
“Preliminary report reveals that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system,” the statement read.
It added that one of the exchanges between the blogger and the soldiers allegedly bordered on subversion, raising concerns over discipline and national security.
“It is important to state that a situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security,” the Army stated.
The Army said Chidiebere was picked up alongside the soldiers involved for investigation.
While the soldiers remain in military custody, the influencer has been handed over to relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Army reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, noting that it would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served.
“We will continue to act within the ambits of the law in safeguarding our sovereignty,” the statement added.
