The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged northern politicians nursing presidential ambitions to shelve their plans until 2031, insisting that President Bola Tinubu deserves full support to complete his tenure and consolidate on his developmental strides.
Akume made the call on Tuesday during a two-day interactive session on government-citizen engagement held in Kaduna.
The event, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, focused on assessing electoral promises and fostering stronger civic engagement for national unity.
The SGF, who represented the presidency, used the forum to defend the Tinubu administration’s track record, arguing that the president had fulfilled many of his campaign promises and laid solid foundations for national growth and unity.
“President Tinubu promised to govern impartially, and so far, he has kept that promise. He has touched every part of the country positively. There is a need to encourage a performing leader so he can do more,” Akume said.
Addressing the rising political agitations from parts of the North ahead of the 2027 elections, Akume warned against any move that could truncate the gains made so far.
“I urge northern politicians to wait until 2031 before aspiring for the presidency. This is not the time to distract a government that is clearly on course,” he added.
The SGF listed key achievements of the Tinubu-led administration, including the revamping of Nigeria’s security architecture, revitalisation of agriculture, and improved food security through strategic interventions that have led to a reduction in prices of farm produce.
He also credited the president with increasing fiscal capacity at the sub-national level through the controversial removal of fuel subsidies.
“States now have more funds to execute meaningful projects and deliver dividends of democracy to the people,” Akume noted.
The interactive forum drew participants from civil society, traditional institutions, youth groups, and public officials, all of whom deliberated on bridging the trust gap between the government and citizens.
Akume commended the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation for creating a platform that encourages dialogue and policy accountability.
His call comes amid growing political realignments and subtle campaigns ahead of the next general elections, with some northern politicians reportedly strategizing for a return to power.
