Global music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has returned to Babcock University, 11 years after his graduation, with a promise to upgrade the institution’s music department.
Davido, who paid a courtesy visit to his alma mater, was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Afolarin Ojewole, alongside other top officials of the university.
During the visit, the singer toured the institution’s facilities, including the music department, and granted an interview at the university’s media studio.
Speaking with journalists, Davido said Babcock played a pivotal role in shaping his career, noting that he could not tell his success story without acknowledging the institution.
“I can’t even talk about my story without mentioning Babcock,” he said.
The award-winning artiste pledged to support the growth of the university’s music department by funding a dedicated building and equipping it with world-class facilities.
“I feel like it’s a department that needs its own building. Furnishing the music department with the required equipment just like the personal one I recently did in Lagos — it’s going to be a high-class music studio,” he said.
He added that plans were underway to finalise discussions with the university management before the end of the year.
Highlighting the growing value of the creative industry, Davido said, “Music is oil and creativity right now is oil too.”
Reflecting on his time as a student, the singer said the institution instilled discipline in him, which has contributed significantly to his success. He also recalled meeting his wife, Chioma Rowland, during his time at the university, adding that many of his early fans emerged from the student community.
Davido advised young people to prioritise education, stressing that academic grounding remains essential despite the allure of fame and wealth.
“My advice to anybody coming up is, first things first, believe in yourself,” he said, urging students to focus on their studies while nurturing their talents.
Welcoming the artiste, the Vice-Chancellor described the visit as historic and reaffirmed that the university remains a home for the singer.
Ojewole noted that the establishment of the university’s music department and other developmental strides had benefited from the support of Davido’s family, including scholarships and infrastructure projects.
“We boast about you, we dance your music and we celebrate you,” he said, expressing optimism that the department could evolve into a full-fledged school of music and creative arts in the future.
Also speaking, the Head of the Music Department, Dr. Segun Ojuola, described the visit as a “groundbreaking homecoming” for a global icon.
The university management commended Davido for honouring the invitation despite his tight schedule and expressed appreciation for his continued commitment to giving back to his alma mater.
