In a major political shift in Kebbi State, former National Women Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Hajiya Maria Waziri, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Waziri formally announced her defection on Monday at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, where she led a delegation of supporters to join the APC.

She was received by the Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, who described her decision as “timely and commendable”.

Governor Idris assured the defectors of full integration into the party, stressing that the APC remains committed to inclusive politics and people-oriented governance in the state.

“Hajiya Maria is my younger sister, and at the same time, my elder sister by marriage. I know her capacity and what she is capable of contributing to the progress of Kebbi State,” the governor said.

He further reaffirmed that his administration would continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people and support all residents of the state, regardless of political background.

Also speaking was the Kebbi State APC Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kana-Zuru, who welcomed Waziri and her supporters, assuring them of fairness and equal opportunities within the party.

“Our governor has done a lot for the people of Kebbi State. Your decision to join the APC is a good one, and you will be treated equally like every other member of the party,” he stated.

In her remarks, Waziri said her defection was driven by the performance of the APC-led administration in Kebbi State and at the national level, marking her first political cross-carpeting in two decades.

“I have been in opposition for the past 20 years and have never defected to any other party. Today, I am joining the APC because of the positive changes I have seen in Kebbi State and Nigeria at large,” she said.

Her defection is seen as a significant boost for the APC in Kebbi State, particularly among women and grassroots political structures, as the party consolidates its influence ahead of future political contests.
