Leading industry professionals from Nigeria and abroad are set to converge in Lagos for the ASHRAE Nigeria Chapter’s 2026 Distinguished Lecture, a four-day technical gathering focused on sustainable building design, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance in the built environment. The event, organised in collaboration with Mega Clima, will run from May 19 to May 22 across two major venues in Lagos. Sessions will hold at the Landmark Centre, Oniru-Lekki, from Tuesday, May 19 to Thursday, May 21, while the grand finale is scheduled for Friday, May 22 at Four Points by Sheraton, Lekki.
According to the organisers, the lecture will bring together engineers, architects, policymakers, manufacturers and facility managers to examine how standards and professional ethics can drive safer, healthier and more energy-efficient buildings in Nigeria and beyond.
Speaking ahead of the programme, President of the ASHRAE Nigeria Chapter, Engr. Franklin Olatunji, said this year’s edition will centre on the theme: “The Roles of National Codes, Standards and Professional Responsibility in Sustainable Building Design.” He stressed that strict adherence to building codes and professional standards remains essential to improving energy performance, indoor air quality and long-term sustainability in modern infrastructure.
“Compliance with established codes and standards is critical to ensuring energy efficiency, good indoor air quality and sustainable building outcomes,” Olatunji said.
The event will feature a lineup of renowned local and international experts in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) industry. Among them are Dr. Samir Traboulsi, founder of the ASHRAE Lebanese Chapter and senior lecturer at the American University of Beirut; Engr. Farook Mehboob, former President of ASHRAE and Chairman of S. Mehboob & Co Limited in Pakistan; Engr. Muhammad Sajid, former ASHRAE Region-at-Large General Chair; and Architect Olusegun Paul Adetokunbo Ladega, Managing Director of Interstate Architects Limited.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Engr. Abayomi Akindele, noted that ASHRAE is a global engineering body with more than 50,000 members across over 130 countries, working to advance building systems, indoor air quality, refrigeration, energy efficiency and sustainability through research, standards and professional development.
He added that the Nigerian chapter chose this year’s theme to reinforce the importance of technical standards in shaping the future of the country’s built environment, especially at a time when demand for energy-efficient and climate-resilient infrastructure is rising.
According to him, “ASHRAE, founded in 1894, continues to advance sustainable technology for the built environment through research, standards development, publications and professional education.”
He explained that participants expected at the lecture include HVAC designers and contractors, architects, engineers, healthcare facility managers, hotel operators, data centre specialists, oil and gas professionals, and other key stakeholders in the construction and infrastructure ecosystem.
The 2026 lecture is expected to deepen technical conversations around sustainable construction practices, strengthen professional collaboration, and promote greater adoption of global standards in Nigeria’s fast-evolving built environment sector.
