The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has said the defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to the All Progressives Congress represents a major political realignment in Adamawa State.
He disclosed this in an X post on Friday following the governor’s reported movement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Onanuga described the development as a significant political gain for the ruling party, writing: “Big Blow for Atiku in Adamawa: Fintiri joins APC, making Tinubu’s party a juggernaut in the state.”
He stated that the governor’s defection extended beyond his personal political affiliation.
“Adamawa Governor Umaru Fintiri joins the All Progressives Congress, APC, taking away Abubakar Atiku’s entire home base to President Tinubu’s party,” he wrote.

In a 14-minute statewide broadcast from his new governor’s office, the governor announced that he had decamped with his entire cabinet and all PDP officials, stating that his decision was in the developmental interest of the people of Adamawa State.
Immediately after the broadcast, Peoples Democratic Party flags were dismantled in the governor’s office and across the Government House.
The post said the governor justified the defection as being in the “developmental interest” of Adamawa State.
“Governor Fintiri said he defected in the ‘developmental interest’ of the people of Adamawa State.”
Meanwhile, Onanuga also linked the development to the political outlook of former vice president Atiku Abubakar ahead of the next presidential election.
“With the presidential election less than a year away, Fintiri’s defection is surely a big blow to veteran presidential runner Atiku Abubakar.
“If a politician is not so popular at home, he has no business selling his candidacy to outsiders.
“The time is nigh for Atiku to consider retiring from politics and going to his second home in Dubai,” he concluded.
