Nigerian activist and social media personality Olajide Abubakar Rasak, popularly known as Jidex, has spoken out on the personal toll of activism, stressing that activists are often subjected to intense scrutiny, misinformation, and public backlash simply for taking a stand.
In a recent interview, Jidex emphasized that activism does not erase one’s humanity, noting that many activists are frequently misunderstood, attacked, or judged without full knowledge of the facts.

Recalling his own experience, Jidex addressed a controversy that once trended online, where he was accused of failing to deliver an advertisement after allegedly receiving ₦220,000 from a client. The allegation gained traction on X (formerly Twitter) after a media handle shared screenshots of private chats, suggesting that he had agreed to promote a brand but did not meet the expected timeline.
As the post circulated, social media users reacted strongly, with many criticizing Jidex and questioning his professionalism. Comments flooded the platform, with some demanding accountability and others amplifying the narrative without seeking clarification. However, Jidex has since debunked the claims, stating that the circulating version of events was incomplete and misleading. According to him, the situation was resolved internally, but the backlash had already escalated due to the speed at which misinformation spreads online.
He described the incident as a clear example of the price activists often pay. “When you speak up for people or against injustice, anything about you can be weaponized,” Jidex said, adding that activism often attracts hostility, even when facts are distorted.
Drawing parallels with fellow social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), Jidex noted that outspoken advocates frequently face legal, social, and reputational challenges. While acknowledging that VDM’s approach is controversial, he highlighted that activism in Nigeria often comes with resistance, regardless of intent or impact.
VeryDarkMan’s activism has led to multiple encounters with law enforcement, including arrests and court appearances related to allegations of cyberstalking, impersonation, and defamation. His outspoken nature has earned him both praise and criticism, reinforcing Jidex’s point that advocacy rarely comes without consequences.
“In fighting for others, you may be hated, misunderstood, or even punished but that doesn’t remove your humanity.” Jidex sighed.
He urged social media users to prioritize fact-checking and restraint, warning against the rush to judgment that often defines online discourse. According to him, the same platforms used to amplify justice can also become tools for character assassination.
Jidex maintains that while activism is necessary, it is emotionally demanding, and those involved should not be stripped of empathy simply because they are public figures.
