The Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, has disclosed that the university will on Satursay, confer Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees on 117 graduands as part of activities marking its ongoing 35th Convocation Ceremonies.
Agboola, who spoke on Friday, during the award of Bachelor’s Degrees to graduating students across six faculties, said the ceremony would also produce 256 holders of postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees, while 5,808 undergraduates are set to graduate in the 2024/2025 academic session.
Among the PhD graduands are a judge of the Ogun State High Court, Justice Olufunke Odubanjo, and a senior officer of the state Ministry of Justice, Dr. Adesanya Adebayo, who emerged as the first doctoral products of the university’s Faculty of Law.
Providing a breakdown of the undergraduate results, the vice-chancellor said 147 graduands made First Class; 2,051 earned Second Class Upper Division; 2,927 obtained Second Class Lower Division; 571 bagged Third Class degrees; 26 had Pass degrees, while 86 were uncategorised.
Agboola said the university had continued to consolidate its reputation among state-owned institutions, noting that OOU recently ranked 16th out of 321 universities in Nigeria in the latest Webometrics ranking.
“Among state universities, OOU placed second after LAUTECH, reflecting our sustained investments in academic visibility, research output and digital infrastructure,” he said.
He added that the university had maintained 100 per cent accreditation of its programmes, describing the feat as evidence of its commitment to quality assurance and the global competitiveness of its graduates.
“Our achievements have strengthened our focus on education, employability and entrepreneurship. We remain committed to positioning OOU as a 21st-century citadel of higher learning,” Agboola said.
The vice-chancellor also commended the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), noting that thousands of OOU students had benefitted from the scheme for tuition and monthly upkeep.
“This initiative has prevented many indigent students from dropping out. On behalf of our students, I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
He further expressed appreciation to the Visitor to the university and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for what he described as consistent and unwavering support since assuming office.
The convocation programme featured the award of bachelor’s degrees to students from Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Education, Law, Pharmacy and Social Sciences on Thursday, while seven other faculties Administration and Management Sciences, Agricultural Management and Rural Development, Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources, Clinical Sciences, Engineering, Environmental and Science — held their ceremonies on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, is billed to deliver the 35th Convocation Lecture on Saturday, marking the grand finale of the ceremonies.
The lecture, themed “Repositioning Nigerian Universities as Innovation Hubs for Entrepreneurship and National Development,” will also feature the conferment of PhD, master’s and postgraduate diploma certificates on 373 postgraduate graduands.
Agboola said the theme aligns with the university’s vision of driving a knowledge-based economy through innovation, digital transformation and sustainable development, in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He added that Tijani’s leadership in Nigeria’s technology ecosystem and his national and international standing in digital policy and entrepreneurship uniquely position him to deliver insights critical to the future of higher education in the country.
