Award-winning comedy, The Fisherman is officially in Nigerian cinemas nationwide starting today, May 15, 2026, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment.
After a successful international festival run and a private premiere held on May 13, 2026 at Landmark, Lagos, the film arrives in cinemas across Nigeria to kick off its theatrical debut.
The Fisherman premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the UNESCO Fellini Medal. It went on to win Best Narrative Feature at the American Black Film Festival and received a nomination at the NAACP Image Awards.
Directed by Zoey Martinson and executive produced by Yvonne Orji, the film brings together a cross-continental cast and crew, with strong Nigerian representation both in front of and behind the camera.
At the heart of the story is Atta Oko, a retired fisherman whose simple dream of owning a boat takes an unexpected turn when he partners with a sarcastic talking fish. What follows is a comedic journey from a coastal village to the city.
Blending comedy, fantasy, and magical realism, The Fisherman delivers a bold theatrical release that celebrates African storytelling on a global stage.
