The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that only 420,415 candidates out of the 1,955,069 who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scored above 200 marks, representing just 21.5 percent of the total.

This was disclosed on Monday via the Board’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, as part of the release of the statistical breakdown of this year’s UTME results.

The Board’s analysis showed that 4,756 candidates scored 320 and above, while 7,658 scored between 300 and 319. Another 73,441 scored within the 250–299 range, and 334,560 scored between 200 and 249 marks. Majority of the candidates — over 1.5 million — scored below 200.

Further breakdown revealed that:

983,187 candidates (50.29%) scored between 160–199

488,197 (24.97%) scored between 140–159

73,441 (3.76%) scored between 250–299

7,658 (0.39%) scored between 300–319

4,756 (0.24%) scored 320 and above

Meanwhile, the Board also disclosed that 40,247 underage candidates were granted special approval to take the exam to demonstrate exceptional academic ability.

However, only 467 of them — representing a mere 1.16% — met the performance benchmark required for further consideration.

JAMB revealed that 97 candidates were apprehended for direct involvement in examination malpractices, while an additional 2,157 candidates are currently under investigation for various infractions.

Also, 71,701 candidates were recorded absent during the examination. The Board attributed some of these absences to unresolved biometric verification issues, stating that affected candidates who are cleared will be rescheduled to take the exam at designated centres.

In a related update, JAMB noted that results for candidates under the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), including blind candidates, are still being processed and would be released upon conclusion of evaluation.

The 2025 UTME, as in previous years, serves as the primary entrance examination for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
