Ex-VP insists ADC is a movement for national rebirth
Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that his political ambition is not driven by desperation to become Nigeria’s president but by the desire to see the country repositioned for greatness.
Atiku stated this on Saturday in Lagos at a reception organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to welcome prominent defectors from the PDP and Labour Party. He was represented at the event by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State.
The Adamawa-born politician, who recently dumped the PDP alongside some allies to join the ADC, stressed that the party’s coalition was not about individual ambition but about building a new Nigeria.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being president at all costs. It’s about having a government that can deliver for Nigerians. ADC, to us, is not just a party but a movement,” Olateju said on his behalf.
He maintained that Nigeria was in dire need of a fresh start, particularly as citizens grapple with the effects of subsidy removal, inflation, and insecurity. According to him, the ADC platform offers a new beginning anchored on good governance and collective sacrifice.
The former PDP flagbearer said the choice of who would emerge as ADC presidential candidate in 2027 would not be imposed but thrown open through a free and fair process.
“Whoever emerges will represent the collective voice and aspiration of Nigerians. The point is not Atiku for president at all costs, not Obi for president at all costs. It is about a better Nigeria,” he added.
The event witnessed the defection of several PDP heavyweights, including Board of Trustees member Dr Abimbola Ogunkelu; former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle; Lagos Central Vice Chairman; and ex-PDP Youth Leader, Tai Benedict.
They were formally received by ADC leaders such as the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Kolawole Ogunwale; and Lagos State Chairman, George Ashiru.
Atiku urged Nigerians to look beyond partisan politics and support a coalition that prioritises national interest above personal ambition.
